Murcia and Costa Cálida

If golf, watersports and rubbing shoulders with celebrities is your thing, then you’ll have heard of La Manga. There’s a lot more to the Murcia region however.
Discover the coast, with its small fishing villages and gorgeous, unspoilt beaches. View the breath-taking mountainous areas, to wide arid plains where spaghetti Westerns were filmed. These film sets were left behind and there are ‘Wild West’ theme parks to visit.
There are beautiful National Parks, like the Sierra de Espuna National Park – a mountainous pine forest and the Ricote Valley, the last stronghold of the Moors in Spain, with a lush landscape running alongside the River Segura.
The capital of the region is the historically significant city of Murcia. The city walls date back to 831. Many elegant buildings date from that era. Murcia City has a mix of Spanish and international shops. There is a vibrant cultural life with restaurants, authentic tapas bars and clubs – and seemingly constant festivals and celebrations.
Property on the Costa Calida, Murcia
When looking for a property for sale in Murcia, its worth noting the absence of large-scale building projects. The lack of such projects (as seen further up the coast on the Costa Blanca) has been a boon for the Costa Calida. Admiring holiday home-hunters recognise a laid-back, outdoor lifestyle which also retains an authentic essence of Spain. Murcia and the Costa Cálida are well-serviced for transport. Major airlines fly to San-Javier airport, located right at the heart of the Mar Menor. For a larger choice of flight options, use Alicante airport and travel down in less than an hour. A new airport at Corvera is expected to be operational in late 2018. Tourists and overseas buyers, looking for a property for sale in Murcia or the Costa Cálida, gravitate to several distinct areas. Let’s take a quick look at each:
Mar Menor Property – La Manga Club
Head south from the Costa Blanca, and you pass through Pilar de la Horadada and Torre de la Horadada. Here you’re immediately onto the Murcia coastline featuring the Mar Menor. This is a huge, warm saltwater lagoon separated from the Mediterranean by a 22 km-long spit of land called La Manga del Mar Menor. There is of course La Manga Club, where luxury villas and sparkling new apartments are available. More recently, a cluster of nearby small towns have started to welcome more overseas buyers.
There is a limited amount of Mar Menor property for sale, but if you are determined, you can get excellent value properties here. Two-bed resale apartments start from around €75,000. There are a small number of exclusive new developments, where you might be able to pick up a three-bed pool villa for under €250,000.
Beach and Golf property – Costa Calida
San Pedro del Pinatar (Lo Pagan) – boasting a marina, long promenade and beautiful beaches, San Pedro is popular with expats, but also the Spanish themselves, many of whom own second homes here.
Santiago de la Ribera – this former fishing village boasts wonderful sandy beaches, plus a large street market every Wednesday.
Los Alcazares – another lovely seaside town and popular watersports centre with 7km of beach with spas and golf featuring strongly. The Los Narejos promenade features many shops, bars and restaurants, and Los Alcazares is well-known for hosting feasts and fiestas during the year.
Polaris World Golf Resorts – With six specially designed golf resorts, offering homes at prices substantially reduced from their 2007 peak, buyers can expect the use of swimming and spa facilities, and often shuttle buses which will drop you off at the local beaches. These resorts are now being managed well, and the Nicklaus Design courses are a major attraction.
The most well-known resorts include Mar Menor, La Torre and Hacienda Riquelme. Prices vary, but at Mar Menor, the most established resort, apartments start around €140,000 and villas at €160,000.
Hacienda Riquelme golf course is very close to the small inland village of Sucina that has also become popular with the British market. This is partly because it is also close to another golf course resort, La Peraleja. A two-bed villa or townhouse in Sucina centre can be snapped up for €100k – €120k.
