Santiago de la Ribera is set on the inland side of the Mar Menor – Europe’s largest salt water lake. The Mar Menor is a magnet for holidaymakers, its waters are around 5 degrees warmer than the Mediterranean and it is only 7 metres at its deepest point – making it the ideal spot for all kinds of water sports. Santiago de la Ribera was founded in 1888 by Fray Jose Barnuevo who designed the town’s streets in perfect squares – it became fashionable for wealthy Murcians to buy property there to escape from the city’s heat in the summer. In Franco’s time, the Ciudad del Aire (City of Air) sprang up to accommodate air force personnel from the nearby air base. The base is no longer in use by the military, but many of Santiago de la Ribera’s elegant villas are still owned by the families of pilots from those days. The air base is what made Santiago de la Ribera unique – for such a small town, it has an exceptional range of shops and places to eat – and is popular with Spanish and foreign holidaymakers alike.
With its beautiful palm lined promenade – over two kilometres long – and four stunning beaches, Santiago de la Ribera really does have something for everyone. There are numerous championship golf courses within easy reach, as well as plenty of opportunities to explore the beautiful surrounding countryside – whether you fancy a leisurely stroll, a more challenging hike, bike or horse-riding. San Javier airport is only three kilometres away, so getting here couldn’t be easier. This really is the ideal location for families, retired couples, those relocating to Spain, seeking a holiday home, or looking for a property investment in Murcia. A few minutes on the N332 motorway out of Santiago de la Ribera takes you to the Dos Mare commercial centre with its hypermarket, multiplex cinema, vast selection of eating places and shops and bowling alley – yet the peace and quiet of Santiago de la Ribera remains undisturbed – even in the height of summer you can find quiet, deserted sandy coves and enjoy the sunshine.
With three annual festivals, Santiago de la Ribera maintains a real sense of community. On the 5th of January, the ‘Three Kings’ arrive at night on a brightly lit boat and make their way through the streets, throwing sweets to the children. The 3rd of February sees the annual Pilgrimage to the Hermitage of San Blas. And on the 25th July, the whole town comes to a halt for the celebrations to mark the Feast of Santiago.
