Property for sale: Benissa
It’s easy to be overwhelmed by the sheer volume of Alicante property for sale – you could narrow down your search by concentrating on what some say is the prettiest part of Alicante – the north. Here you’ll find the beautiful town of Benissa, one of the oldest on the Costa Blanca, set 275 metres above sea level. White sandy beaches with crystal-clear water, beautiful mountains and lush valleys with stunning green countryside are all part of Benissa’s appeal.
Benissa had fallen into decline until the late 1980s and early 1990s when the local authorities had the vision to rescue the old part of the town from its slow decay, restoring its splendid medieval architecture and narrow streets. Everywhere you turn you will see elaborate ironwork balconies often decorated with heraldic shields. The Palacio de los Torres-Orduña is open to the public as a cultural centre and library.
Benissa property is popular with expats and the town has become home to thousands of Europeans from Germany, Scandinavia, Britain, the Netherlands and Belgium. They are all attracted by its beautiful countryside, coastline and the excellent climate. Despite this influx, Benissa hasn’t lost any of its innate character and charm. Everyone who lives here would agree that this international community manages to maintain a distinctly Spanish flavour.
Benissa brings the mountains and the sea together. Terraced vineyards and palm trees take you from Benissa town in the hills to Benissa´s coastline with its four kilometres of rocky natural bays and coves.
Benissa is a great place for all activities: countryside walks, water sports, beaches, nightlife and, of course, relaxation. There are many bars and restaurants that provide excellent free, live music. There’s an active musical scene in Benissa too with several organisations that arrange small concerts and recitals at local hotels, restaurants and country house venues.
This area of the Costa enjoys great weather all year round, peace and tranquillity, inexpensive dining and a low cost of living. Throughout the year there are also many fiestas and festivals – with music, food and fireworks.
Country walking, mountain walking and cycling are very big in this area with the choice of both inland and coastal routes. The sheer number of Blue Flag beaches will leave you spoilt for choice. If you enjoy water sports, head for the “Club Náutico Les Bassetes” Yacht Club. Here you will find a sailing school where you can go windsurfing, sail a catamaran or canoe. There is also a professional diving centre where you can enjoy scuba diving. Nearby in the town of Calpe there is a sports harbour where you can try out diving, windsurfing, kayaking and many more sea related activities.
You can travel to Benissa from Alicante or Valencia very easily. The closest airport is in Alicante, 70 kilometres to the south, or alternatively Valencia airport, 110 kilometres to the north. In Benissa there is also a narrow-gauge railway station (FGV) belonging to the Alicante-Dénia railway. These train services are rounded-off by the coaches linking Benissa to Alicante, Valencia, Almería and Barcelona.
