Dolores was founded in 1715 and now has a population of around 11,000, many of whom are Brits and other Northern Europeans who have chosen to make their home in this pretty town. Only 15 minutes’ drive from the coast, Dolores has a good selection of shops and restaurants, and a medical centre. Much of the local economy is agricultural, with fruit and vegetable grown in the region being exported worldwide. This benefits the gastronomy of the region which makes optimum use of the fresh produce available – olives, oranges, lemons, artichokes, beans, pepper, grapes and herbs are all local crops which can be found at the weekly market.

In August, the whole of Dolores grinds to a halt for the August Fair or Feria de Agosto – with lots of fun to be had by all. The surrounding countryside is very beautiful, with two National Parks nearby – one of which, the Parque Natural Lagunas (the salt lakes at Torrevieja) has earned this region recognition as one of the healthiest places to live in the world. Even closer is Parque Natural el Fondo, which is home to many rare birds and is designated an area of outstanding conservational importance. There is a lot to be discovered around Dolores – not least of which is a welcoming community and a slower paced style of living.
